Rory McIlroy's childhood sweetheart ex Holly Sweeney stays silent on his engagement news
Rory McIlroy's ex-girlfriend and childhood sweetheart Holly Sweeney has stayed quiet on the news of his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
Ulster cheerleader Holly (22), who dated Rory for seven years before eventually splitting in 2011 has been active on her Twitter account today, but failed to mention her ex.
"A lot already packed into 2014 and we're only half way through the 1st day, let's see what the other 364 have in store," she said.
Sweeney has spoken publicly about her high profile split and even held a 'Golf Pros, Tennis Hoes’ theme night while appearing on TV3's Celebrity Come Dine With Me last December.
Rory and Caroline took to Twitter to announce their engagement last night, with almost simultaneous posts on the social network.
The pair, who are ringing in the New Year in Australia, tweeted pictures of a diamond engagement ring on Wozniacki's finger alongside a picture of fireworks over Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The star couple have a combined following of more than two million people on Twitter and have frequently used the social media website to have fun with their followers. Announcing the engagement, the Northern Irish golfer and current world number six told his followers : "Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!"
Danish tennis player Wozniacki (23) -- also in her sport's top 10 -- tweeted the same pictures and a message saying: "Rory and I started 2014 with a bang!...I said YES!!!!"
The duo started dating in the summer of 2011.
