It's not just a big day for the rugby players selected for the Lions tour, but also their supportive girlfriends.

As the saying goes, 'Behind every great man is a great woman', and this sentiment is certainly true of rugby players and their particularly supportive other halves.

Amy Huberman tweeted her congratulations to husband Brian O'Driscoll, who narrowly missed out on the Lions captaincy. "Woohoo @BrianODriscoll you flamin gallah," she wrote to her nearly 100,000 followers.

And clearly on a high after hearing the news, she added her well wishes to the rest of the Irish squad selected to play Down Under.

"Well done @KearneyRob @TommyBowe14 @Paul_OConnell @ProperChurch @jamieheaslip @ConorMurray_9 @SeanOBrien1987 and Johnny 'No Twitter' Sexton!!"

The IFTA winning actress wasn't the only familiar face to wish her other half well, former Miss Ireland and top model Holly Carpenter also shared her pride with the public. "So so proud. #Lions2013 #proudgirlfriend."

While Amy and Holly are both in the public eye, many of the players' wives are protective of their personal lives

Tommy Bowe's other half, former Miss Wales Lucy Whitehouse briefly dabbled in modelling, but she has hung up her heels and is now focusing on a nursing career, having moved here for Wales with Bowe last year.

Jamie Heaslip's girlfriend Sheena O'Buachalla is a broadcaster who previously worked with Spin 1038 and in the marketing field, is also a former model with First Option agency and currently lives with her athletic boyfriend in South Dublin.

Meanwhile, 2013 is shaping up to be a big year for Jonny Sexton. Not only did he make the cut on the Lions tour, he is also set to wed his long-term girlfriend, Laura Priestley in Adare Manor, Co. Limerick later this year. The low profile couple have been dating since they were teenagers.

Munster's Paul O'Connell and his wife Emily O'Leary rarely make public appearances together, instead choosing a life outside of the spotlight. Other selections, including Rob Kearney, Conor Murray and Sean O'Brien are all single.
