Bairbre Power checks out homegrown, high-street fashion for the season ahead

Jacquard coatigan, €65; tartan skater dress, €45, and cream check scarf, €20

The coatigan, a handy hybrid between the coat and the cardigan, is one of the stars of the new autumn/winter 2013 collection from Irish high-street brand Alwear. Ideal at this time of the year, when we can have three seasons in one day, the coatigan is up there with tapestry dresses and separates, tartan checks and knit jumpers as a key trend this season.

The wildlife/nature-themed collection features faux fur across coats and collars, while the parka returns in multiple guises this season, from the classic sage-green shade with golden faux fur to the PU-sleeved version – perfect for the back-to-college student or the busy mum on the go.

And don't be too quick to dismiss tapestry prints as being too reminiscent of Granny's couch and cushions. The trend, inspired by the AW/13 catwalk shows, looks set to be around until Christmas.
