SJP's interesting fashion choices make us nostalgic for the glory days of SATC.
Thank heavens for New York Fashion week for injecting some colour and glamour into what is an otherwise grim time of the year. It promises all of goodness and excitement, from FROW-watching to wondering what we can expect at the Victoria Beckham show.
It’s early days but the highlight thus far has been Sarah Jessica Parker, who this week has shown that fashion-wise, she is often imitated but never duplicated.
While we’re repeatedly told that the hit series Girls is Sex and the City for a new generation, it’s not really. As wonderful as it is, nobody is tuning in to see what Lena Dunham is wearing (actually, she’s not wearing clothes that often), the way we did to see what fabulous outfits Carrie donned in each episode.
SJP insists that in real life, she’s no fashion icon and that is not how she perceives herself, but we would beg to differ.
Her outfit at an event last night couldn’t have been more Carrie. The actress wore a check bustier dress, a fluffy blue coat channelling the Cookie Monster and striped coral shoes.
It was eye-catching, it was brave and it was fun and a breath of fresh air after weeks of red carpet safe choices. Lovely as Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence and Naomi Watts all look in their designer gowns; it’s all so very tasteful, that it’s dull.
You might loathe SJP’s outfit but you can’t say that it’s dull and the same goes for the fuchsia Maison Martin Margiela dress she wore to the amFAR Gala Ball, which kicked off NY fashion week. It divided opinion but least you couldn’t say it wasn’t interesting.
What really makes Sarah Jessica the Queen of Cool however, is that while she pulls out all the stops for a night out, the 47-year-old has nailed off-duty dressing to a T. She is not of the Miranda Kerr school of dressing which seems to champion tight leather trousers and white blazers as practical outfit for long haul tights.
SJP is often seen out and about in New York, often in the company of her adorable twins Marion and Tabitha, dressed in jeans, fur jacket, wedge trainers and a beanie hat. She always looks comfortable and casually glamorous although further investigation reveals that the trainers are Isabel Marant so it’s still high fashion, but appropriate high fashion for bringing her kids for a walk.
Other fashionistas like Alexa Chung, Diane Kruger and Nicole Richie might have their champions but ultimately, it is SJP who gets us excited, each and every time. Now excuse us while we go and pin a giant corsage to our jacket.
