I blithely ignore the tubes and bottles of hand cream cluttering up my life – most of the time – and then hope against hope that a half-hearted slathering of lotion will keep my hands looking good. But the recent spell of cold weather has left me with reddened, chapped skin that's demanding some TLC. Thankfully, these creams will definitely help.
Eau Thermale Avene Cold Cream for Hands, €9.66
My hands really hate the cold, turning white and then red at the slightest dip in temperature. Sometimes I fancy I can actually see them ageing. But a slick of this soothing cream definitely revived them. Afterwards, they felt soft and hydrated, and definitely looked a lot better too. Available in a convenient handbag size.
Vichy Essentielles Repairing Hand Cream, €4.90
If you don't take care of them, your hands can age you a lot faster than your face. Knock a few years off by regularly applying some of this nourishing formulation. It boasts a seriously impressive ingredient list including soothing rose gallica, hydrating glycerin and, of course, Vichy Thermal Spa Water.
L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream, €22.95
It feels oh-so-luxurious and this rich, thick cream is particularly good for those with very dry skin. It sinks into hands nice and quickly, leaving them well moisturised and, thankfully, not at all greasy. Expensive but certainly a good pay-day treat.
Phyts Hand Cream, €26.50 (see www.phytsireland.ie for stockist details)
This is an intensely effective cream composed of lemon (an anti-pigmentation treatment), strengthening vitamin E (it's particularly good for nails) and nourishing hazelnut oil. Recommended.
