The Born This Way singer paid homage to Gianni Versace, the designer of the original gown, when she attended an event in Milan, wearing the dress credited for launching the career of a then unknown Liz Hurley in 1994.
The dress is also regarded for turning Versace into an iconic brand, but met with a high volume of criticism at the time for being overtly revealing. In 2008 it was voted the most memorable red carpet dress of all time.
Displaying her ample cleavage in the dress, the singer sported brown locks, tied high in a pony tail, having been blonde the previous day when she appeared with Donatella Versace on the balcony of the Versace atelier, sporting poker straight white blonde hair and smoky eyes, similar to the designer’s.
Gaga tweeted: "Some legends, truly are. Pic of me walking into Gianni's apt, which she covered in 40,000 roses. I love u #Donatella."
The singer, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, paid tribute to the Italian house of Versace throughout the week with her choice of clothes. The previous evening she stepped out in another safety pin ensemble, which revealed her black pants, tummy, midriff and tattooed thigh.
The night before she appeared in another Versace vintage creation with Donatella, a ‘dominatrix’ red dress, worn by supermodels in the 1990s. It was her fourth outfit change of the day, having previously worn a Versace print shirt for a visit to Donatella at her offices in Milan.
Gaga hit the headlines last week when she hit back at criticism that she had put on weight.
Admitting she has put on weight, the singer posted pictures of herself on her blog wearing a bra and thong, with captions like "This is who I am. And I am proud at any size," and, "Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15."
