Imagine being so genetically blessed (and fond of the gym) that you could be pregnant on the Victoria's Secret runway, and nobody even notices. That's the feat that 'Angels' Alessandra Ambrosio and Lily Aldridge managed to pull off at last year's glitzy annual show.
Not to be outdone, fellow Angel Adriana Lima, 31, made an astonishing catwalk comeback last night a mere eight weeks after popping out her second child.
To be clear, she wasn't packing a pair of SPANX under a floaty maxi dress, she was wearing a red, lacy suspender belt and bra that left very little to the imagination.
Of course Lima, who said last year that being a Victoria's Secret Angel was "the highlight of my life… a dream come true for me" was never going to want to miss out on her big moment on the catwalk - after all, there are plenty of other perfect specimens waiting in the wings for a chance to slip on those wings.
Not to mention the highly lucrative financial benefits of being one of the 'chosen ones'. The current line up of Victoria's Secret Angels (including Miranda Kerr, Candice Swanepoel, Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes and Lima) account for five of the top 10 highest paid models of 2012 in Forbes' list, with Lima leading the pack at number four with annual earnings of $7.3 million.
Of course, as Lima exclusively told us last year, perfection comes at a price. Her pre-show regime for 2011 broke down as follows:
Lima, 30, has been working out every day with a personal trainer since August. For the last three weeks, she's been working out twice a day.
"It is really intense, it's not really the amount of time you spend working out, it's the intensity: I jump rope, I do boxing, I lift weights, but I get bored doing that. If I am not moving I get bored very easily."
She sees a nutritionist, who has measured her body's muscle mass, fat ratio and levels of water retention. He prescribes protein shakes, vitamins and supplements to keep Lima's energy levels up during this training period. Lima drinks a gallon of water a day. For nine days before the show, she will drink only protein shakes - "no solids". The concoctions include powdered egg. Two days before the show, she will abstain from the daily gallon of water, and "just drink normally". Then, 12 hours before the show, she will stop drinking entirely.
"No liquids at all so you dry out, sometimes you can lose up to eight pounds just from that," she says.
Add into that mix an insane amount of daily stomach crunches and you're getting close to the postpartum Lima look.
