Cut down on hidden salt – eat less bread and ready meals

Ready meals are laced with hidden salt

As a nation we are eating too much salt, which can raise blood pressure and leave us at higher risk of heart disease and stroke.

However, before we even reach for the salt shaker., around 75pc of the salt we consume is hidden in the foods we eat like bread, breakfast cereal and ready meals.

Adults should eat no more than 6g of salt a day, the equivalent of around one full teaspoon. Children should eat less.

Look at nutrition labelling on food packets. High is more than 1.5g salt per 100g (or 0.6g sodium). Low is 0.3g salt or less per 100g (or 0.1g sodium).

High-salt foods include:

• bacon

• cheese

• gravy granules

• ham

• salted and dry roasted nuts

• salt fish

• smoked meat and fish

• soy sauce

• stock cubes

• yeast extract

• pasta sauces

• crisps

• pizza

• ready meals

• soup

• sandwiches

• sausages

• tomato ketchup, mayonnaise and other sauces

• breakfast cereals.
