Finland famously hosts the Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu each year. Now, there's a new contender for the hypothetical title of Most Bizarre Festival -- and it's currently taking place as part of Sligo Live 2009.
Whereas air guitarists might fantasise about being, say, Slash from Guns 'n' Roses, this contest allows air fiddlers to let loose their inner Martin Hayes or Colm Mac Con Iomaire.
Contestants are getting to indulge their 15 minutes of fame before the public in Quayside and Johnson Court in the centre of Sligo town, and their performances are judged by a clapometer.
According to Sligo Live's executive producer Rory O'Connor, "Air Fiddle is one of the highlights of the festival each year. We thought it would be just a couple of chancers fooling around, but the competitors are brilliant and the standard is very high."
The current champions are The Fiddle Sisters, sisters-in-law Cathy Brennan and Cathy Ann Brennan, who won for their Chaplinesque, silent movie-style.
Sligo Live 2009 is a music and arts festival and continues until Monday. See sligolive.ie for further details.
