Ray Winstone has claimed that the British filmmaking industry is waning because there is a lack of cinemas showcasing independent films.

The star of British films such as Sexy Beast and The Sweeney suggested multiplexes were shunning indie movies for mainstream ones as he attended the BFI Luminous fundraising gala in London.

"We've got so much talent, it's unbelievable. At the end of the day, if it's not shown in a cinema, then it's a waste of talent and we'll lose them to somewhere else," he said on the red carpet.

"Films are only that good if we've got somewhere to show them. If we're talking about the British film industry, then we have to have somewhere to show our films," he added.

Jonathan Ross entertained a star-studded room including Jude Law, Helen McCrory, Damian Lewis, Sienna Miller, Romola Garai, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant, Julian Fellowes and Michael Gambon at the event.

"There are some great movies being made by this country, in this country and with the talent born here," Jonathan said.

Husband and wife Damian and Helen did a reading together, with Olivia reading a poem, and there were live performances from Eliza Doolittle and Gabrielle Aplin.

Over £250,000 was raised from an auction, which included a Formula 1 replica car from Rush, walk-on parts in BFI Film Fund films, stills from Sam Taylor-Johnson's short film I Love You More and the opportunity to join Ken Loach editing his latest film Jimmy's Hall. All the profits will go towards preserving and digitising the BFI National Archive.

Amanda Nevill, CEO of the BFI, said: "Luminous heralds a real moment for British film, a moment when the best of British film talent has come together to celebrate the achievements of the British film industry and preserve its legacy for the future."
