Whole picture of Cruise's ancestry yet to be revealed

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise arrives at the Merrion Hotel in Dublin late last night ahead of the premiere of his new film ‘Oblivion’

A Roscommon family are investigating their ancestral links to Tom Cruise through a wedding photograph dated 1912.

Francis and Mary Fannon, of Kilteevan, are in possession of the black-and-white picture which includes Thomas Mapother (shown here second from left in the middle row) – believed to be related to Cruise.

It was taken on the wedding day of Mr Fannon's grand-aunt Sarah Roche, to a John Brennan, in Ballyleague.

Mr Mapother was Ms Roche's cousin, and emigrated to America not long afterwards.

Mr Fannon told the Irish Independent that many of the Roches are buried in the same crypt as the Mapothers, at a local cemetery in Kilteevan.

"We're quite happy there's a link there, but we're still looking into it further," Mr Fannon told the Irish Independent.

"My aunt knew a lot about the family history, but sadly when she passed away, we never properly documented it. We do know that the Roches and the Mapothers were married at some stage down the line though."
