After months of uncertainty over the Emmy-winning show, Showtime bosses finally revealed a sneak peek of the upcoming series and admitted it would be the last one.

Showtime's president of entertainment told The Hollywood Reporter: "Dexter is a landmark franchise for our network and we cannot wait to unveil the conclusion of this series as we know it to the millions of passionate fans who have supported the show season after season."

The network's chairman and CEO Matt Blank added: "When it debuted in 2006, Dexter redefined the genre by taking the anti-hero to new heights and pushing the boundaries of the television landscape. Dexter paved the way for the next generation of award-winning Showtime series and its cultural impact will be felt for years to come."

The eighth series of Dexter will air on US screens on June 30.

CBS Corp chief Leslie Moonves previously hinted that the next series would be the last one, and leading man Michael - who plays the killer with skewed values - has said he is ready to say goodbye to his alter-ego.

"I'm grateful for having played this character for as long as I have. It's never gotten boring, it's never felt like I'm spinning my wheels. There's always a new challenge, a new dynamic or relationship to consider or try to unfold," he said.

Dexter has been nominated for 25 Emmy awards, including four for outstanding drama series.

During the show's run, Michael has been nominated for best actor five times in a row, and has scooped 10 Golden Globe nominations. He has won four Emmys and two Golden Globes.
