BROADCASTER Sinead Desmond and her husband David Ryan have separated after four years of marriage.
A statement released yesterday on behalf of the 38-year-old 'Ireland AM' host confirmed she and the Cork-born sailor split over four months ago.
"David and I separated in September 2012. There is no one else involved, David is a wonderful guy and we are still great friends. This is a private and personal matter and we hope you respect our privacy at this time. There will be no further comment from either David or myself."
The couple originally met six years ago, after Desmond joined RTE's rival station.
It was publicly known that the pair wanted children, but Desmond had spoken about the difficulties they were experiencing in starting a family. In August, she insisted she and Ryan were "still trying" and remained "hopeful".
"But equally, if it doesn't happen for us naturally, I would be very happy to adopt or foster – fostering is something I've always wanted to do."
Desmond also praised her husband for his care and support after she suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2008. The incident happened only months after they announced their engagement and resulted in Desmond spending two months in hospital.
