Tom Cruise has given a rare glimpse into his feelings after the break-up of his relationship with Katie Holmes, saying that: "life is tragicomic".
In an interview with a German TV station for the premiere of his new film Oblivion, Cruise said he was taken by surprise by the separation. The couple announced last year that they were separating after five years of marriage.
"I did not expect it," Cruise said in the interview.
On his 50th birthday, soon after, he had: "an unbelievable amount of time to think."
His conclusion was that: "Life is a challenge ... to be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have everything under control, and then it hits you – that's what life is."
Cruise told the channel ProSieben: "Life is tragicomic, you need a sense of humour."
In a statement released at the time of the divorce, the couple said that they were committed to "working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests." The statement said: "We want to keep matters affecting our family private, and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs, and support each other's roles as parents." Holmes, raised a Catholic, did not want her daughter brought up in the Church of Scientology.
In the interview, Cruise enthused about the filming of the science fiction movie 'Oblivion' in Iceland, saying: "I've done white water rafting, driven around by snowmobile on a glacier and climbed mountains." In the film, Cruise plays a soldier on a deserted future Earth.
