HE had been silent on Twitter since his meltdown on Friday, but last night Rory McIlroy made his return to the social network site to tweet about the Manchester Utd game, in the company of girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

The World Number One golfer tweeted with one hour to go before kick-off, and continued to share his views during the match, with United trailing McIlroy tweeted: “Get Rooney on!!”

McIlroy  clearly watched the game in the company of his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki who also tweeted during the match:

“Watching champions league.. Man Utd v Real Madrid... @McIlroyRory clearly not happy.. Red card for Nani was very questionable..”

The pair, who are usually very communicative over Twitter, had not publicly conversed with each other on the social networking site for several days, since McIlroy walked off the course in Florida midway through the second round of the Honda Classic.

Yesterday McIlroy admitted to American magazine Sports Illustrated that his walk off  in Florida was a mistake.

McIlroy told the sporting magazine: “What I did was not good for the tournament, not good for the kids and the fans who were out there watching me — it was not the right thing to do."

Last week, the Danish beauty was questioned about her future with the Co Down golfer.

Asked if there were any marriage plans on the cards, she replied: "I think that question will be for him to answer."

Speculation had been mounting that his meltdown was in some way  linked to his romance with the tennis star.  The golfer said he was in a bad place mentally over the weekend.

McIlroy’s mood could also have been boosted by the sale of his Co Down mansion.  The identity of the buyer and details of the sale price have not been disclosed, but the luxury five-bedroom property in the countryside had an asking price of €2.5 million.
