Sunshine more fun than TV spotlight
Miriam Ahern was in Portugal last week. It seems a long way to go to avoid watching Bertie, the documentary on Monday night, but I know how she feels. Why didn't she just avert her eyes like the rest of us?
"I'm soaking up the sun in the Algarve with my grandsons," she told me on the phone on Tuesday afternoon. She was at the villa of daughter Georgina and Georgina's husband, Westlifer Nicky Byrne, with Rocco and Jay.
On Wednesday evening Miriam flew back to Dublin, where she was quick to get back into the swing of things. "I'm going straight to Kerry with Terry for some golf," she told me, referring to her partner, restaurateur Terry McCoy. It's important in these recessionary times to make everything go with a swing.
Take Johnny Ronan who still knows precisely how to do that -- despite having his foot in a cast.
The bearded boulevardier was at Olivia Kenealy's 30th birthday bash last Friday night in Krystle along with his good friend, developer Ronan Barry, who also had his hand in a cast. As one mole quipped: "Maybe the bandaged duo thought a night on the tiles would cure their injuries?"
Other well-known male attendees at Olivia's soiree included actor Liam Cunningham, businessman Niall McCrudden and Dave Murphy, an ex of just about every model in Dublin. Speaking of exes, Olivia's ex Eddie Irvine wasn't there, but model-turned retailer Rebecca Davis was.
Last Wednesday, she celebrated the opening of her chic jewellery boutique in the Westbury Mall. Gem lovers like Lisa Fitzpatrick, Kathryn Thomas and Rachel Kavanagh all enjoyed the new Butlers Chocolate Café Ice Cream and Cozmo's whilst eyeing up the jewels.
"A few hints will be dropped to Paul, Enda and Shane, I think..." said my Boodles Deep Throat.
