THEY may be the grand old men of Irish music but U2 proved they still rock last night, sweeping the boards at the Meteor awards.

The four-piece took the awards for Best Irish Band as well as Best Live Performance for their sell-out gigs at Croke Park. And their album, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, took a gong for Best Irish Album.

Young guns, Westlife, are still snapping at their heels and were presented with the Best Irish Pop Act.

The awards attracted a host of musical guests to the Point Depot including Sugababes, McFly, The Darkness, Westlife, Jamie Cullum, The Pogues, Bell X1, Republic of Loose, Damien Dempsey and Gemma Hayes.
