A SMILING and jovial Steven Spielberg arrived in Dublin last night in anticipation of the only European premiere of Lincoln, which will be held in the Savoy cinema later today.

The Oscar-winning director was in high spirits as he took time to sign autographs for a delighted throng of fans waiting outside the five-star Merrion Hotel.

Spielberg will meet his friend and star of his movie Daniel Day-Lewis today, along with actress Sally Field, before the trio attend the premiere.

Meanwhile, Day-Lewis is in for a very special performance tonight when he will be treated to a rendition of Danny Boy by Pogues singer Shane MacGowan.

It will be the high point of a gala ball attended by scores of VIPs, including Bono and The Edge of U2, and Spielberg's wife, Indiana Jones actress Kate Capshaw.

The legendary Three Tenors will also perform, as will Lady In Red singer Chris De Burgh.
