Chris de Burgh wowed the celebrity crowd at the Burlington Hotel last Sunday night.
That's the view of Paddy Cullivan of the Camembert Quartet, which acted as house band at the gala ball following the European premiere of Lincoln.
"Chris was so good, he was practically messianic, going into the crowd like Bono at Live Aid shaking hands. The punters loved it. Frankly, I don't think Bono could have followed him," Paddy told The Diary.
But the night's other big name, Sinéad O'Connor, did a good job too.
With no act to follow Chris, the mother of four took to the stage to perform all her biggest hits, including 'Nothing Compares 2 U'.
"Sinéad wasn't going to sing it, but our keyboardist kept playing the opening note and everybody started shouting at her to do it. It was a magical moment when Sinéad started singing," Paddy said.
Sinéad couldn't resist delivering a cheeky 'With or Without You' for the absent Bono, who, in fairness raised €42,000 for Wicklow Hospice by donating his Peter And The Wolf drawings, which were bought by Steven Spielberg's wife Kate Capshaw in the earlier charity auction.
