The actor plays ape Caesar in the films about primates taking over and said that the first film, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. was the hardest physically, so he was happy his character had aged for the upcoming Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.

He said: "Playing young Caesar, where I had to scamper around on all fours, was the biggest thigh-burning experience of all time.

"I'm very happy to now be playing the more mature and wise Caesar that can now walk around. Hopefully, in the next film, there will be a lot of 'armchair Caesar' where he can sit back, watch the telly and have a Dirty Martini."

Andy, who also played Gollum in the Lord Of The Rings films and The Hobbit, said he had become known for his characters' voices but found them easy enough to pick up again when fans asked to hear them.

He explained: "They're sort of encoded, those voices are sort of a part of your muscle memory now. I mean, I get asked to do Gollum on a daily basis, so that hasn't gone very far. But Caesar is a new one, people asking me to do Caesar is quite interesting."

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is due to be released in cinemas on July 17.
