RORY McIlroy is an old- fashioned romantic at heart, according to his new fiancee, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
The future Mrs McIlroy revealed that her golf superstar boyfriend sought her parents' blessing before proposing as they watched the fireworks at Sydney's Harbour Bridge on New Year's Eve.
"He asked my parents for permission, like traditional, which was great," Wozniacki said. "I was very happy," she added.
Wozniacki admitted that as both lovebirds are former sporting world number ones, they have a huge understanding of one another's careers, which has helped the relationship.
"It's a special moment, a special time in our lives," Wozniacki said.
"It's amazing to have everything set in the personal life and we can really focus on our games and the year ahead of us in the sport, which we're both looking very much forward to. It's great to have someone there who understands you and is always there to support you."
"I think mostly it's just he understands how it is to be a professional athlete," she said.
"All the expectations and all the ups and downs and how amazing it feels when you're winning and how tough it can be when you're not."
The 23-year-old tennis ace said that getting engaged was the "best possible way to start off the year".
The sporting world's highest profile romantic couple announced their engagement on Twitter in the earlier hours of January 1.
"Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!", McIlroy tweeted alongside a photo showing a large diamond solitaire ring on his Danish fiancee's finger.
Wozniacki then tweeted, "Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! ... I said YES!!!!" in reply.
