The two stars have been embroiled in an on/off relationship for several months, with Chris, 24, seemingly confirmed they have split for good earlier this week. He told interviewers that while he still felt a great deal of love for Rihanna, 25, he is too young to be considering "wife-ing" anybody.

His ex-girlfriend is said to have been incensed by the remarks. The pair first split in 2009 after he assaulted her, with Rihanna apparently angry that Chris' attitude doesn't seem to have moved on enough.

"She really thought that was a sexist, degrading thing for him to say,” a source told Chicago Sun-Times, “Especially after all Rihanna endured after he beat her and all that.”

The Barbados-born singer is said to have been fuming after she heard Chris' comments. She was so angry she apparently decided to confront her former lover over the phone.

"She really blasted him, using language that made it sound like she never will get back with him again — no matter what people think," the insider added.

Both Rihanna and Chris have been in New York City this week, but they didn't spend any time together.

The exact reasons for their latest split are unknown, but both have made their feelings clear about the situation on Twitter.

"Settling is not an option! Nothing less than 100% loyalty, honesty, and respect!! Love ain't for kidz #butimsleeptho (sic)" Rihanna fumed.

Chris tweeted: "Sometime loving someone is too much! So loving from a distance will help everyone grow! Be blessed. Live ya life! (sic)"

Rihanna confirmed she was back with Chris during a lengthy interview with Rolling Stone magazine in January. She explained that while she knew some people would question her decision to give the relationship another go, she had to in order to find happiness.

"I wanted him to know what it felt like to lose me. To feel the consequences of that... But I got real with myself, and I just couldn't bury the way I felt,” she explained. “I decided it was more important for me to be happy, and I wasn't going to let anybody's opinion get in the way of that. Even if it's a mistake, it's my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I'd rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it."
