Rihanna Back to basics

•Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty she moves from from Barbados to the United States at age 16 to pursue her music career.

•She signs for Def Jam Records after auditioning for the then-label head Jay Z in his office.

•Her 2007 album Good Girl Gone Bad yields the biggest hits of her career -- 'Umbrella', 'Don't Stop The Music', 'Disturbia' and 'Take A Bow'. She is nominated for nine Grammy Awards

•In March 2009 Chris Brown is charged with assaulting Rihanna and making criminal threats. Leaked police photographs show the singer has suffered serious facial injuries.

The controversy blows up just a few weeks after Rihanna accompanies Brown to Dublin on his world tour and is seen partying in Club 21.

•Released in November, her fourth album Rated R is a torrid affair which many see as being informed by her experience of physical violence.

•Twelve months later, she puts out her fifth LP Louder.

Parents groups criticise the lyric content of the single 'S&M'. There is further controversy when the video to 'Man Down' shows her taking revenge on a sexual predator.

In America, the conservative Parents Television Council campaigns unsuccessfully for the promo to be banned.
