Hollywood is La La Land but movie gossip websites appear to be the home of the loolah. Maggie Gyllenhaal's arrival in Ireland last week sparked international consternation among the kind of overheated celebrity-scrutineers for whom every picture tells a convoluted story.
In photographs snapped at Dublin Airport, the American actress was deemed to be sporting what one alarmed report described as a "dowdy, cropped hairstyle". Feverish speculation ensued about the significance of this "bowl cut" and the tale it told about the state of Gyllenhaal's mindset, marriage, career etc.
Eventually, the conspiracy nuts reached a momentous conclusion: Gyllenhaal's new hairdo must have something to do with her latest film – Lenny Abrahamson's Frank which is being partly shot in Ireland.
Movie fandom is all about image-worship but some movie fanatics seem genuinely surprised that appearances can be deceptive.
