Octavia Spencer is to star in a remake of Murder, She Wrote.
The Oscar-winning actress will play a hospital administrator turned amateur detective who has a fascination with true life crime and self published her first crime novel.
Desperate Housewives executive producer Alexandra Cunningham will write the script and co-produce with fellow Desperate Housewives allum David Janollari.
Angela Lansbury, 88, starred in the original Murder, She Wrote, which ran for 12 seasons on CBS from 1984-1996 and is one of America's most successful TV shows, pulling in 23 million viewers during its heyday.
Angela played Jessica Fletcher, a retired widow and successful detective novelist, who was always helping the police solve crimes by spotting the clues they had missed. The role earned the actress 12 straight Emmy nominations and 10 Golden Globe nods. She won the Globe for the role four times.
The new adaptation will mark Octavia's first regular TV role.
