Thousands of women this week shared aselfies of themselves wearing no makeup on Facebook and Twitter in support of the fundraising efforts for cancer charities.

The trend was picked up by Gwyneth Paltrow, Adele and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o who posted pics yesterday of themselves barefaced for the clean water charity Drop4Drop.

Britney took a moment to share a link on Twitter to clean water charity Drop4Drop and asked fans not to take drinkable water for granted.

“We are so lucky to have clean water. Lets make clean water possible for all w/ @drop4drop! #WorldWaterDay #ILoveWater,” she wrote.

Miley also chimed in, adding: “#ILoveWater Make a difference this #WorldWaterDay with @drop4drop.”

The Drop4Drop website shared the stunning statistic that 800 million people lack access to clean drinking water.

Activists from the charity urged visitors to donate, revealing as little as $2 could “give a person access to safe clean water for the very first time”.

Earlier in the day, Gwyneth Paltrow did her best to promote the effort, posting a make-up free selfie on Instagram.

“Full of healing power. #iLoveWater #WorldWaterday @drop4drop,” she captioned an image of herself chugging a bottle.

And Oscar winner Lupita who is on a break in New York tweeted a photo of herself in a personalized robe, sipping a glass of water.

"Thank you, @theempirehotel for my first monogrammed gift. #theempirehotel" she tweeted.

Niall Horan, Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber also promoted the charity.

“Make a difference this #WorldWaterDay today with @drop4drop,” Justin wrote.

The organisation works in India and Africa, and in countries where emergency relief is needed.
