The Oscar-nominated Shame star, who portrays Bathsheba Everdene in a new adaptation of Thomas Hardy's novel, admitted the early starts and the outdoor scenes are taking it out of her.

"I'm getting picked up at 5.30 in the morning tomorrow - to Dorset. I am so tired!" said the 28-year-old.

"I am enjoying it so much, it's brilliant. It's outside a lot. Seventy per cent of the film is fields, exteriors and outdoorsy things, which is really great but it's cold and really tiring," she added.

Carey stars in David Nicholls' big-screen version alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Tom Sturridge, Michael Sheen and Juno Temple.

The actress, who will next be seen as singer Jean Berkey in the Coens' Inside Llewyn Davis alongside Oscar Isaac and Justin Timberlake, admitted she didn't have much time to prepare for her role in the musical drama as she had just completed Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby.

"I ran the lines with my mum. Is that preparation? Well, I came straight off Gatsby so I didn't have a lot of time to get into the history," she recalled.

"But we spent time with (producer) T-Bone Burnett, who has first-hand experience of all of these people. It was mainly being around the rest of the cast, getting involved in the music and understanding a little bit of what the community of folk singers were like in Greenwich Village at that time and what a tight-knit community that was."

Carey, who's married to Mumford And Sons' frontman Marcus Mumford, joked about persuading Timberlake to release a folk-tinged album.

"He could do a folk album, He can do anything. That's what is so irritating about him. He's so multi-talented. He sounds amazing," she added.
