Moore: I begged not be tough guy

Shemar Moore stars in Criminal Minds

Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore has revealed he begged the show's writers not to make him just a stereotypical tough guy.

The actor plays FBI agent Derek Morgan in the crime drama, a criminal profiler who had a troubled childhood and was a victim of child abuse.

Joe revealed: "I wouldn't want him to be squeaky clean. I begged the writers in the beginning when the show first started. I said I don't just want to be the tough guy who kicks down the doors.

"Because as fun as it is to play action, and say 'Baby girl this' and 'baby girl that', I didn't want to be one note.

"So because I'm the tough guy of the group, I'm the one with the muscles, so I wanted him to have some flaws and some weaknesses or some vulnerabilities, because that's what makes somebody interesting.

"I love being the bad a** but what I find more interesting is when you can deal with his conscience, and what's important to him, and what scares him and what overwhelms him, and all that justifies the way he is."

Shemar also joked that he can't understand why all the show's writers aren't in therapy because they come up with such dark storylines for the criminals.

He said: "They got creepy stuff going on in their head! But we take a really dark creepy world and are still able to mix in compassion, knowledge, education so that once you're scared and entertained by us, once the show goes off, you feel better about the life you have.

"No matter how bad your life might be, it's not as bad as the life going on on that screen."
