The 30-year-old actor wandered the floor at the San Diego convention wearing a rubber Bart Simpson mask, and even tried to strike up conversation with fans at the Doctor Who stand, who were oblivious as to who he was.

Matt revealed in a backstage video for BBC America: "I'm going on the floor as Bart Simpson because I love the Simpsons and I'm going to go and check it out."

As he wandered around the convention incognito, checking out the stands he said: "It's been the first year that I can properly do this. I'll just pretend to be American to people."

Matt even visited the Doctor Who stand where he looked at Dalek models and posed for a picture next to a giant poster of himself, but no one realised who he was.

At the end he laughed: "No one wanted to talk! Everyone's like 'Who's the weird guy talking to me as Bart Simpson?' Hey guys I tried to talk and make friends!"
