Kyle MacLachlan is joining the cast of Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series.

The 55-year-old actor - star of shows including Twin Peaks, Desperate Housewives and How I Met Your Mother - will play the recurring role of the mysterious father of Skye (Chloe Bennet), according to TV Line.

The origin of Skye's parentage, how she ended up in an orphanage and her potential superhuman origins loomed large in the Channel 4 series' first season.

The season finale closed with Centipede's Raina approaching a mysterious figure, presenting a photo of Skye and saying, "I found your daughter."

Also joining the cast for the second series of the Marvel action series includes Xena: Warrior Princess's Lucy Lawless as Agent Isabelle Hartley, while Quantum Of Solace actor Simon Kassianides will play the Bakshi.
