Lupita Nyong'o said she's proud to represent Lancome

Lupita Nyong'o has been unveiled as the new face of Lancome.

The Oscar-winning 12 Years A Slave actress said in a statement that she was proud to represent the brand.

She added: "Beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman's freedom to be herself."

It is the first major endorsement deal for Lupita, 31, who was Hollywood's 'It girl' throughout the film awards season thanks to her looks and style on the red carpet.

The Mexican-born Kenyan will be the first black ambassador for Lancome, which features Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz and Lily Collins as spokeswomen.

Ads featuring the actress will start appearing this summer.

Lupita picked up the best supporting actress Oscar for her performance as slave Patsey in director Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave.
