ACTRESS Susan Loughnane has told of how this season of 'Love/Hate' has been the most "harrowing" for her as playing a prostitute was a deeply emotional challenge.

Audiences saw the return of the 24-year-old in the award-winning RTE drama's third series on Sunday.

In the wake of the death of Aiden Gillen's drug lord John Boy in season two, Loughnane's character Debbie has got caught up in the sex trade.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, the Malahide-born star said she had sleepless nights thinking about the dark turn her character has taken.

"Season two had its challenges, especially when my character was beaten up by John Boy on the balcony.

"But with season three, it's on a whole different level. It's a very deep and a very personal female trauma. I found it hard."

Loughnane helped to launch the Crafts Council of Ireland's 2012 Christmas campaign.

"I do 90pc of my Christmas shopping at crafts fairs every year. Ireland is known for its creativity, so the more we can do to help, the better."

Brian McGee of the Crafts Council of Ireland told the Irish Independent that up to 89pc of festive shoppers are now buying locally produced gifts.

Loughnane posed with a number of gifts from the National Craft and Design Fair which takes place between December 5 and 9 at the RDS.

She wore a colourful T-shirt dress (€190) and pink cropped jacket (€520) by Irish designer Helen Steele with jewellery by Theresa Bolger.
