The two actors, who have already picked up numerous awards, have been honoured with nominations for their performances in Homeland and BBC mini-series Parade's End, respectively.

Damian, whose Homeland co-star Claire Danes is also nominated, faces competition for best actor from fellow Brit Andrew Lincoln, Kevin Spacey, Bryan Cranston, Timothy Olyphant and Matthew Rhys.

Benedict will battle it out against Behind The Candelabra stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, as well as Toby Jones, Al Pacino and Dominic West in the best actor in a movie or mini-series field.

Sienna Miller and Imelda Staunton have received nods for their portrayal of Tippi Hedren and Alfred Hitchcock's wife Alma Reville in the BBC and HBO TV drama The Girl, while Romola Garai and Rebecca Hall compete for best actress in a movie or mini-series.

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay and TV presenter Cat Deeley face each other for best reality host.

Horror series American Horror Story: Asylum and comedy The Big Bang Theory lead with six nods each.

ITV's period drama Downton Abbey and Homeland made the cut for best drama series, alongside The Americans, Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones and The Good Wife. But hit show Mad Men didn't get a look-in, only scoring one nomination for actress Elisabeth Moss.

Other surprise snubs include Modern Family, Community and Girls for best comedy series.

The third annual Critics' Choice Television Awards will be held on June 10 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
