‘Let them eat wedding cake’ – Kim Kardashian and Kanye West set to say ‘I do’ at Marie Antoinette’s Palace of Versailles

Should we be surprised?
The palace – surrounded by opulence and with interiors of grandeur –was home to Louis XVI and his wife, Austrian princess Marie Antoinette.
The royal couple were overthrown in 1789 due to their deep unpopularity – they distanced themselves from the poor of Paris, retreating to the rich and surreal world of Versailles where they were cosseted by their courtiers and subjects. Sounds like this could have made for a popular reality series.
TMZ.com are reporting the couple will definitely tie the knot in Versailles, and not the Italian city of Florence as previously reported.
The palace has five spaces available for events – but sources have told TMZ the couple will exchange vows at the palace’s most exclusive spot, the Orangerie.
The venue 350 years old, and has two huge staircases - named the "One Hundred Steps.
During the summer, the famous garden is filled with more than 1,200 exotic trees.
Famously, Louis XVI once said the garden were as important to him as the palace itself.
The Orangerie is officially open for summer events from May 20th – so the timing is good for Kim and Kanye.
No word on whether the wedding will be filmed for ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’.
But as Kanye’s lavish engagement party was filmed for the series, we’re hoping the same will happen here.
Incidentally, a number of other important events happened here.
In 1871, France lost a war against Prussia and Kaiser Wilhelm I was proclaimed Emperor of Germany at the palace, a humiliation for France.
The Treaty of Versailles – the post World War I peace treaty which humiliated a defeated Germany, encumbered them with reparations, and sowed the seeds for World War II – was signed in the palace’s Hall of Mirrors.
Now, is Kimye’s wedding about to eclipse them all?
