Jennifer Lawrence has denied that she was having a pop at Meryl Streep when she referred to the star at the Golden Globes.
The actress, 22, took to the stage and said "What does it say? 'I beat Meryl!" when she won a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical for her performance in Silver Livings Playbook.
But Lindsay Lohan, as well as some other Twitter users, were not impressed tweeting, "no-one should ever mess with a legend such as Meryl Streep."
Jennifer told David Letterman's Late Show that she was simply quoting from the film First Wives Club.
"I can't believe nobody's ever done it before! It was a quote from First Wives Club," she said, explaining that Bette Midler's character says the "I beat Meryl" line while examining a Golden Globe statuette in the film.
"It was so perfect and I said it and I had no idea Lindsay Lohan would take to the twitterverse... Twitter users were very upset. "
"All of a sudden it was '(Jennifer) hates Meryl Streep'....as if I've had my eyes on getting that girl forever...."
"I wanted to make a public statement, like: 'Hey idiots, it's a quote from a movie,'" The Hunger Games actress told the TV host.
