The Australian actress, who attended L'Wren Scott's funeral in New York, will begin work on Kim Farrant's indie movie in coming days, said The Hollywood Reporter.

Joseph Fiennes has stepped in to play her screen husband, after Guy Pearce dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

The pair are set to portray a married couple, whose relationship suffers from the strain of their two teenage children's disappearance into the remote Australian desert. Hugo Weaving will play the policeman leading the investigation.

"I am always looking for the right script to bring me home to Australia. The moment I read Strangerland I knew this was a film I couldn't say no to," she said.

"I'm looking forward to working on a film in Australia and I'm very excited to be working with Joseph Fiennes and Hugo Weaving," she added.

Filming is scheduled to take place around Sydney and the remote outback towns of Canowindra and Broken Hill.

Strangerland sees the actress returning to her homeland to shoot her first independent feature since 1989's Dead Calm. It is her first Australian film since Baz Luhrmann's epic drama Australia in 2008.

Nicole's upcoming roles include playing Grace Kelly in drama Grace Of Monaco, voicing the villain in Paddington and portraying British explorer and writer Gertrude Bell in Werner Herzog's Queen Of The Desert.
