Keanu Reeves surprised fans with his appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, looking scruffy and heavier than usual.

The 48-year-old former heartthrob - star of The Matrix and Speed - was in Cannes to promote Man Of Tai Chi, his directorial debut which he also stars in.

Keanu - who wore his hair long, reminiscent of his look in slacker movie Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure - sparked comment about his figure as he appeared to have piled on pounds.

Man Of Tai Chi is an action film, featuring the martial arts Keanu first learned for the Matrix films.

The drama, shot in Beijing and Hong Kong, depicts the spiritual journey of a young innocent martial artist as he struggles to maintain his traditional values and beliefs against the pressures of modern society. Targeted for his fighting skill, he is lured into underground combat and faces corruption.

The film, in English and Mandarin, was shot over a year ago.

Last year Keanu and Alex Winter revealed they were hoping to reprise their roles as slackers Ted 'Theodore' Logan and Bill S Preston Esq for the third instalment of the hit Bill and Ted sci-fi comedy movies, with a script already written.
