KATE O'Mara, the Dynasty actress, is said to be ‘beyond distraught’ after her son was found hanged at their home on New Year's Eve.
Dickon Young, 48, was found by a neighbour in the garage of the €1 million cottage he shared with his mother, 73, in the village of Long Marston, in Warwickshire.
Mr Young moved in with his mother, whose stand out role was as Joan Collins' scheming sister in Dynasty, after developing mental health problems following a car crash several years ago.
The pair had lived in the village, which hosts the summer music festival Global Gathering, for about 12 months.
Today, a woman answering the door at the actress's cottage, said: "It is a difficult time for us" and declined to comment further. Villagers expressed their shock at the apparent suicide on Monday afternoon.
One villager, who did not want to be named, said: "Kate has not been well herself recently but I am told that she is, quite understandably, beyond distraught by Dickon's death.
"Police were called and he was [later] found. The family is considering it a suicide.
"They [Kate and Dickon] were very close and she doted on him, especially since he suffered what appeared to be something of a mental breakdown in recent years."
They added: "Despite only living here a relatively short time, Kate has become a genuinely well-liked member of the community and we are all deeply saddened by her loss."
David Marcuse, a warden at the village's St James Church, said: "I don't think Dickon was very well. He had a car accident some years ago and his mind was never the same, as I understand it.
"I think he suffered from periods of depression. Physically he seemed fine. He didn't leave the house very often, but I used to see him occasionally walking through the village.
"It is a tragic situation all round and everybody's thoughts will be with the family."
O'Mara, who was divorced twice, remains best known for her role as Caress Morell, the scheming sister of Joan Collins' Alexis Colby in Dynasty.
She has also starred in a number of hit TV shows including Doctor Who, the 1980s classic series Howards' Way and Absolutely Fabulous.
Mr Young previously dated Avengers actress Jenny Agutter, who is ten years his senior, in the mid 1980s.
He worked as a stage manager, rigger and carpenter at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and ran his own set-building company in Los Angeles, specialising in suspended scenery, before settling up his own company building treehouses in the mid-1990s.
By 2002, he was once more involved in the theatre, working as a set designer on his mother's company's production of The Rivals at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre.
Mr Young, whose father is the actor Jeremy Young, is not thought to have been working recently.
Following their divorce, O'Mara gave birth to another son but when his father left, she made the agonising decision to have the child adopted. The boy, Chris Linde, contacted her decades later but the pair did not get on.
She married second husband Richard Willis in 1993 but they divorced three years later.
