The star of Cold Feet and Coronation Street did his first stand up gig in 1989, and as he returned to the stage he told the Manchester Evening News what had tempted him back to comedy.

John said: "I've made a name for myself as an actor and there's a generation that don't know me for stand up.

"I'm celebrated as an actor, but you can't rely on that to get people in. I make sure I'm extra good because of that - it's not a personal appearance, I have to work hard to earn their respect again."

The 44-year-old father-of-two also confessed that after seeing an article about the top earners in comedy he thought he might be missing out.

"Peter Kay was worth £22m, Lee Evans £17m, Alan Carr £14m and John Bishop £5m. I thought, 'Do you know what? Why did I stop?'

"I don't wish that to sound mercenary because it wasn't the reason I've gone back to it. But it made me realise that at times like this people really want to laugh."

When John started out in comedy his routine mostly consisted of performing sketches in character, but he admits he's had to change with the times.

"Going out and doing character is a risk," he said. "So much has changed in popular culture and there's no characters any more. So mainly, I'm trying to do stand up without them.

"It's 12 years since I did this properly, maybe more, but I've been DJing at Bop Local and I really like the atmosphere."
