'I've been badgering John to get the baby room ready' - Mum-to-be Maura Derrane dishes out the jobs to TD husband
He spends his days fighting his corner in the Dail, and now John Deasy TD is being dished out his fair share of labour at home.
The Waterford Fine Gael politician is getting ready for the arrival of his and wife Maura Derrane's first child in June.
The RTE presenter is counting down the days until she and John can meet their son or daughter, and told the Herald that she has been badgering her other half to help 'babyproof' their house.
"The baby's room is not ready yet at all, we still have to sort it and I've been badgering John in his down time to do things," said 43-year-old Maura.
"We can only get so much sorted too as we can't paint at this stage because we've kept the sex a surprise.
"John wanted to know if it's a boy or a girl, but I said absolutely no way -- I think it's important not knowing until they arrive. He's so excited, we both can't wait now."
Yesterday, Maura posted photos of her growing baby bump on her twitter account.
Her afternoon show, Today, with Daithi O'Se is currently off air, and while the gaelgoir would usually take on TG4's Feirm Factor in the summer, she turned the post down this year.
"It's too close to my due date and it would require a lot of driving, so I just felt it was better not to -- I'll miss it though," she said.
"We've been told Today should be back in September or October so I'll likely be off until then, but I actually haven't thought far past the birth and having the baby yet. All going well, I'll be back in work by the end of the year."
And she is hoping John will take some time off, too.
"I'd like to think he will in the beginning, because we'll need it with the sleepless nights and the shock to the system," she said.
Having a child in her 40, Inis Mor native Maura said she has unintentionally become a poster girl for the older mum.
"I've so many women coming up to me, telling me that I've inspired them," she said.
