Model Holly Carpenter wishes her grandmother, legendary social diarist Terry Keane, could see her taking part on the hit show Britain’s and Ireland’s Next Top Model.
Terry, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 68, sensationally revealed on The Late Late Show that she had an affair with former Taoiseach Charles Haughey after dropping hints about a relationship with a prominent political figure in her columns.
The well-known journalist was the principle contributor to the Sunday Independent’s long-running gossip column The Keane Edge but she left the paper after she sold the story of her 27-year affair to a rival British paper, The Sunday Times.
Speaking to RTE Radio 1, Holly said, ‘‘I used to think she was so glamorous and looked up to her and so I would have loved if she was still around for all this because she died quite young.''
The former Miss Ireland said she thinks about her successful grandmother all the time.
‘‘When the whole thing happened on The Late Late Show I was very young, I was only about four or five I think. I started to notice it when I went to secondary school a few people would say to me oh my Mum knows your granny,’’ she recalled.
Even when she hit the headlines herself in 2011 when she won Miss Ireland, the model said there was huge interest surrounding the fact that she was the famous columnist’s granddaughter.
‘‘I wasn’t surprised because she was really well known in Ireland. Because I’m in the industry now I meet clients that knew Terry or have worked with her, especially designers, and they always have funny stories for me about her which is great because I didn’t know her as an adult,’’ she said.
The 21-year old model that is currently dating rugby international star Cian Healy, is lighting up television screens in the British TV reality show hosted by Elle MacPherson.
She admitted the latest episode on screens tomorrow night will be very ‘dramatic’ as she gets involved in an altercation with another model.
‘‘There is a big argument with me and Angel on our fairy tale shoot so it’s going to be quite tense and I don’t know how it’s going to be edited so I’m a bit nervous,’’ she admitted.
