Brendan O'Carroll has admitted his disappointment in the first Mrs Brown film - which was directed by and co-starred Anjelica Huston.

The Irish comedian's character, Agnes Brown, inspired by his own mother, is now the star of his award-winning hit BBC comedy Mrs Brown's Boys, and is heading to the big screen in Mrs Brown's Boys D'Movie.

But in 1999 a Hollywood adaptation of Brendan's novel The Mammy, based on the same character, was made by The Addams Family star.

Brendan told the Radio Times that Anjelica had "no feel for Dublin life".

The actor and writer added: "I wasn't the producer on the film, but I managed to write myself a cameo, playing the town drunk, Seamus.

"I thought I'll be fecked if I'm making a movie I'm not in. And it needed a few more laughs."
