The Australian singer, who split from boyfriend Andres Valencoso last October, recalled that she was persuaded to get into the recording studio after having a "heart to heart" with the Get Lucky star.

Williams later wrote the track I Was Gonna Cancel for her, "the most positive song on the album", which features in Minogue's new album Kiss Me Once.

"I had two days in the studio with Pharrell, which was a dream come true. On the second day, I was having a bad day and was thinking of cancelling.

"I told myself to keep it together but as soon as I saw Pharrell and he asked me how I am, I burst into tears," she said during a session streamed live on Facebook from the London headquarters.

"I was a blubbering wreck but Pharrell was cool. He talked me through it and gave me a heart to heart.

"He turned my bad day into something amazing by writing the song... but I was patchy and didn't sing very well. It was honest and embarrassing."

Minogue, 45, gave a sneak preview of five tracks from the record, followed by a question and answer session hosted by her fellow Voice judge Ricky Wilson.

The singer, who has more than 2.3 million fans on the social networking site, said the album - her first with Jay Z's record label Roc Nation - symbolised a "new beginning and a new era".

"I had a true epiphany and a huge realisation after I celebrated 25 years in the business in 2012," she revealed.

"My vision was a horizon with nothing on it and a calmness came over me. I realised I need to do something different. This has been an exciting and challenging year."

Minogue, a judge on BBC's The Voice, continued: "I don't want to go round and round and become a parody of myself. I am moving forward and hungering for new challenges. I am going towards the second half of my life and I wanted to feel re-invigorated."

The singer also revealed how spending New Year's Eve alone - "the best she'd ever had" - inspired her to chase new experiences.

Minogue's new album Kiss Me Once is released on March 17, while her new single Into The Blue is out now.
