The Prime Suspect actress told TV Times she couldn't understand her sex symbol status and didn't think she was "interesting enough".

She said: "I don't know why people think I'm sexy. I suppose it's because I always look as though I've just got out of bed - which I usually have.

"Personally, I don't think I'm very sexy. I don't think I'm interesting enough. If I were a man, I don't think I'd go for the sort of person I am."

Helen, who voices a part in upcoming Pixar animation Monsters University, said she didn't appreciate efforts to pigeon-hole her that way when she was younger, either.

Speaking about her tabloid image in the 1970s, she said: "In my mind I was a serious actress, but men in that era got away with such sexist c***. They were pushing me to become a Barbara Windsor 'Carry On' type. And it wasn't because of my beauty - I was never beautiful. It was because of these [her breasts]."

The documentary The Many Faces Of Helen Mirren airs tonight (June 22) on BBC Two.
