Gosling: I'm scared of the sea

Ryan Gosling avoids celebrity parties so people 'don't get sick of him'

Ryan Gosling has revealed that he has a fear of the ocean.

The Canadian heartthrob, who now lives in Los Angeles, admitted that his phobia about water comes from his childhood days.

"I find the ocean scary," he said.

"I can swim, but when I was a kid I grew up next to a river. One time I fell into a road going into the river and I asked my mother why there was a road going into the river. She said there was a town down there and they had sunk this town, and our town was a relocated version of that town."

He added: "The fact that I had been swimming in a river where there were houses and graveyards underneath me just soured the deal for me."

Ryan, who stars in Prohibition-era crime drama Gangster Squad alongside Emma Stone, Josh Brolin and Sean Penn, joked that he stays away from the showbiz parties circuit because he doesn't want people to get sick of him.

"I don't want you to get sick of me. I am already sick of myself. I mean, I am in so many movies you've got to take a knee on some things," he quipped.

"With movies, there is so much promotion involved. You really are confronted with yourself all over the place and it kind of messes with your head."
