Michael Douglas has told how he felt compelled to lie about what form of cancer he had - and described how he went "numb" when he was diagnosed with the disease.

The Behind The Candelabra actor described his shock at being given the news in an interview with fellow Hollywood star Samuel L Jackson on ITV's This Morning.

Speaking as part of Male Cancer Awareness Week, he said: "I had an inkling... particularly when I saw the look on his (the doctor's) face. It kind of all rushes over you, you get a little numb... very numb."

Michael, who separated from wife Catherine Zeta Jones over the summer but is now rumoured to have moved back in with her, also said on Thursday's show that he lied about what form of cancer he had.

"I had to go on a big tour for Wall Street so we kinda said there's no way we can cancel the tour and say we don't feel well.... I said you just gotta come out and just tell them I've got cancer and that's that.

"But, the surgeon said 'let's just say it's throat cancer.' I said 'OK, you don't want to say it's tongue cancer?', I said 'why's that?' and he said 'well, if you really wanna know why, if we do have to have surgery it's not gonna be pretty. You'll lose part of your jaw and your tongue and all of that stuff'. So I said, 'OK sure.'"

Samuel, who is fronting new campaign One For The Boys, urged men to open up about health problems in an attempt to tackle cancer.

"We'll talk about our injuries, but we won't talk about our illnesses, so I think it's time we do that," he said.
