Michael Douglas got exactly what he wanted this Christmas: the opportunity to celebrate the day with estranged wife Catherine Zeta Jones and their two kids, Dylan ,13, and Carys ,10, at the family's Central Park West apartment.
Whether or not the 69-year-old actor, who separated from his wife of 13 years back in August, can now manage to save his marriage remains to be seen, but insiders suspect odds might finally be swinging in his favour.
Contrary to reports that CZJ flipped over her husband's blithe remark to The Guardian that his throat cancer was HPV-related, sources close to both camps suggest their split came about for reasons far more complex. She continues to struggle with bi-polar disorder and he is still on a quest to help his son Cameron who is currently serving 10 years in jail for drug dealing.
Regardless, Douglas has been steadily working his way back into the family fold over the last few months, routinely pitching up at the family home each morning to make the kids breakfast and again at night to see them into bed.
Last weekend, the pair were spotted out in public together for the first time since August, having brunch with Carys at the Ocean Grill on the Upper West Side. Spies tell the NY Post the couple, both wearing their wedding rings, were "really focused" on their daughter during the meal and also that they spent much of the time "laughing together", leading to speculation that the original New Year 2014 deadline for the couple to decide if they will file for divorce might well pass quietly.
A GOOD YEAR FOR STONE AND CRUISE
Sharon Stone, Tom Cruise and Oprah Winfrey are in for a very happy new year if celebrity psychic Thomas John is on the ball.
The 28-year-old NYC-based clairvoyant, who counts JLo and Courteney Cox among his high-profile clientele, predicts 2014 is the year when Stone (who is set to appear in four major movies) will make a dramatic comeback; Cruise will find love with a well-known, younger brunette and Oprah will regain her title as queen of daytime TV.
John, who this time last year foresaw a woman in a white dress falling at the Oscars; a new Pope and a small US terrorist attack in April, is also predicting that 2014 will be the year when Paris Hilton becomes engaged, Jessica Biel and Blake Lively become pregnant and Justin Bieber starts "a hot and heavy relationship with someone new".
On the flip side, John sees trouble ahead for celebrity couples like Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, who he says will struggle through major cheating rumours. John anticipates not so lucky Katy Perry and John Mayer will split. Kanye West and Kim Kardashian will make it up the aisle, John says, but its hard to see why you would need any special powers to declare this will not happen without major last-minute drama and chaos.
OBAMA HAS SOME MAKING UP TO DO
'Save the date' cards for Michelle Obama's 50th birthday party didn't exactly deliver on the First Lady's flirty promise that her next decade will be all about fabulousness.
The invites to the January 18 White House bash (themed: 'Snacks & Sips & Dancing & Dessert') are arriving with instructions for guests to "wear comfortable shoes, eat before you come and practise your dance moves."
While the entertainment line-up for the night remains under tight wraps, seasoned Obama-watchers are speculating the Prez (who, after that ill-timed selfie with Helle Thorning-Schmidt and David Cameron, might feel he has some making up to do) could be planning to up the glamour quotient by surprising his wife with performances from her two favourite singers: Beyonce and Adele which, you've got to admit, would be fiercely fab.
