Hollywood actress Angelina is set to direct the World War II drama, from a script by Oscar-winning writers Joel and Ethan Coen.

Skins star Jack O'Connell has already been signed up to star as Louis Zamperini, an athlete and WWII bombardier who raced in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. In 1943, his plane crashed in the Pacific. He managed to survive without food and water for 47 days, enduring shark attacks and air attacks, before washing ashore on a Japanese island behind enemy lines, where he was held as a prisoner of war and tortured for two years.

Domhnall, who stars in Richard Curtis' new film About Time, and young American rising star Finn Wittrock have both joined the cast as Phil and Mac, two of the men stranded at sea with Zamperini, The Wrap reported.

Finn is best known for playing Damon Miller on the soap opera All My Children, and his upcoming roles include an appearance in Darren Aronofsky's Noah.

Unbroken is based on Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken: A World War II Story Of Survival, Resilience And Redemption.

Variety quoted Angelina, who made her directorial debut in 2011 with Bosnian war drama In The Land Of Blood And Honey, as saying: "I've had the privilege of spending a great deal of time with Louis Zamperini, who is a hero of mine, and now - I am proud to say - a dear friend. I am deeply honoured to be telling his extraordinary story, and I will do my absolute best to give him the film he deserves. I am grateful to Universal for making this film a priority."
