TV presenter Daithi O Se is expecting his first child just weeks after the death of his father.
The O Se family has been “cheered up” by news that Daithi’s wife Rita is pregnant with the baby, which is due in early March.
His father, Maidhc Dainin (71), was among the few people who knew about the baby when he passed away suddenly on August 29.
“There's always light at the end of the tunnel but the news about the baby means that light has started to shine brighter,” Daithi told the Herald.
“We are absolutely delighted – it happened at just the right time. It's cheered the whole family up.”
Maidhc, a well-known writer, had been suffering from a cancerous shadow on his lung and his death came as a huge shock to the family.
But Daithi says the baby news has given all the family, including his mother Kathleen, who was married to Maidhc for 51 years, a huge degree of solace.
“It's great for my mother as it gives her something else to focus on – it's taken the sting out of the tail slightly,” he said.
Daithi shared the good news with Maidhc before his death.
He said: “We've known for a while but didn't want to tell anyone before the 12 weeks had passed. But when my father first went into hospital I had to tell them what was happening, even though Rita was only three weeks gone.”
