Last weekend in Colin's mansion in Los Angeles, Rita married her boyfriend Joel B Michaels, who is three years her senior. Joel was the producer of Basic Instinct 2 and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
Age Action. That's the game now. Last week, we had PJ Mara, a proud new father at 71. This week, it's Rita Farrell (mother of young punk Colin), a blushing bride at 70.
"It was a small affair," a friend of Rita's told me, describing the scene. You can just picture it from all those W (wedding) movies so beloved of Hollywood (My Best Friend's W; The W planners, The W Singer – oh, I could go on and on.) Suffice it to say, the swimming pool was covered over to create the dancefloor for the ceremony, which was attended by family, chief among them three of Rita's children Colin, Claudine and Catherine, and friends from Ireland.
"She has never been so happy in her life." her friend told me. "She never thought she'd get married again, or even live with a man again. I was delighted for her when she rang to say: 'Guess what! I'm getting married'." Rita Farrell (nee Monaghan) has been separated from husband Eamon for many years; the divorce came through last year.
Rita and Joel met last October in LA when mutual friends set them up, unbeknownst to Rita. The spark between them was instant. When they went out on their first date – lunch in Santa Monica a few days later – Rita never expected to find love in La La Land. They were engaged in late November – and happily they didn't make it a five-year one.
Ironically, it was only last September in Dublin that Rita sat in the Bridge Bar and Bistro restaurant with her niece – Colin's godmother and owner of the restaurant, Martina Fox, and told her that she thought she'd never fall in love again.
Lovely Rita started her American life proper last month when she moved over to California lock, stock and barrel. The couple now live in the trendy Venice Beach district of LA. For their honeymoon, the newly weds went on a wine-tasting tour around the Napa Valley in California.
